A General Equilibrium Analysis of the Impact of Inward FDI on Ghana: The Role of Complementary Policies AgEcon
Arbenser, Lawrence.
The need for external capital (FDI) inflow to finance the current account deficit of developing countries cannot be over-emphasized. Foreign direct investment takes predominance over other types of capital inflow into developing countries. How would an increase in FDI and a reduction in import tariff levels in isolation affect household welfare and other macroeconomic indicators? How would the concurrent application of the two enhance the expected impact? This paper explores the above questions by using a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for Ghana, implemented in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) to carry out specific counterfactual simulations. This paper concludes that the primary benefit of an increase in FDI inflow for a...

A magyar marhahús versenyesélyei az EU-ban AgEcon
Meszaros, Kornelia; Beres, Daniel.
A tanulmány a magyarországi vágásra szánt, élőszarvasmarha-külkereskedelem versenyképességét, komparatív előnyeit és hátrányait vizsgálja az 1999–2010 közötti időszakban. A marhahús jelentős része elsősorban exportra kerül. A mutatók tendenciáját tekintve a hátrány mértéke évről évre csökkenő. A külkereskedelmi mérleg minden vizsgált évben aktív. A 2008-ban kibontakozott pénzügyi válság hatása ugyanakkor érződött, s jelentős visszaesést okozott, ami mindhárom mutató értékeiben megnyilvánult.

Gazdag, Laszlo.
A Jegybank feladata a pénzstabilitás megteremtése és fenntartása, míg a többi cél (növekedés, foglalkoztatottság, egyensúly stb.) megvalósítása a gazdaságpolitikai eszköztár és intézményrendszer egyéb területeire tartozik. A pénzstabilitás primátusa ma már elfogadott a nyugati közgazdasági gondolkodásban. A valutaleértékelés kétélű fegyver, csupán az elavult exportszerkezetet konzerválja, a hatékonysági korlátok puhítása révén. A magyar gazdaság importfüggősége technikai jellegű, ezért a leértékelés csupán inflációs nyomást eredményez. --------------------- Establishment and...

ANÁLISE DE FATORES PRODUTIVOS E COMERCIAIS DA CADEIA LÁCTEA NO BRASIL AgEcon
Pedra, Daniele Fernanda Bosisio Moura; Pigatto, Gessuir; Santini, Giuliana Aparecida.

Analysis of Country of Origin Labeling for Food Products in Taiwan Using Auction Experiment with Tasting AgEcon
Chern, Wen S.; Lin, Huei-Ching.
This study attempts to evaluate the economic benefits of the country of origin labeling (COOL) in Taiwan. A Vickrey second-price sealed-bid auction was conducted to estimate the consumer’s willingness to pay for Taiwan products vs. those from China and Vietnam. Our experiment was designed to investigate the impacts of product tasting on bidding behavior. The regression results show that tasting raised bids for Taiwan and China teas, but lowered bids for Vietnam tea. The econometric results show very high premiums for Taiwan products. Taiwanese consumers and food producers stand to benefit greatly with COOL.

Chinese Market Access Barriers of U.S Oilseeds and Grains AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Appiah-Danquah, Gloria.
China was admitted into the WTO in December 2001 and this raised the hopes of the US that China will open up to agricultural trade with the US. However, this potential has not been realized. The goal of this study is to determine the impacts of trade impediments and barriers of the market access of US oilseeds and grains in China. A market access variable that was obtained by dividing the total value of U.S soybean and corn exports to China by U.S agricultural G.D.P was regressed on China’s per capita income, exchange rate of the yuan to the dollar, arable land to labor ratio in the U.S and a dummy variable representing China’s WTO accession. The result found per capita income to have a positive impact on market access of U.S oilseeds and grains in China....

Bel Hassen, Malika.
French estuaries, from the Atlantic coast to the English channel, have been characterized by a poor phytoplankton biomass. The turbidity has always been considered as the limiting factor for phytoplankton. Estuarine ecosystems are situated at the boundary between the land and the sea. Consequently, they are subject to an enrichment by nutrient loadings from upland ecosystems. Although it has been demonstrated that a part of the nutrient loadings support an important benthic production. The part, which escapes to the estuarine benthic and planktonic food web and is exported to adjacent estuarine ecosystems, still remains undetermined. Quantifying the nu trient and particulate matter exchange between a macrotidal Bay, the Fier d'Ars, and the adjacent ocean...

Global Coffee Import Demand in a New Era: Implications for Developing Countries AgEcon
Feleke, Shiferaw T.; Walters, Lurleen M..
With coffee prices at their lowest in a century, producing countries, which are mostly developing countries, are facing the worst crisis in history. The International Coffee Organization (ICO) acknowledges that poverty and unemployment are growing so rapidly that the consequences would be dire if nothing is done to halt the decline. This study draws welfare implications for producing countries based on import demand analysis for coffee in the three largest importers – the United States, European Union, and Japan. A differential production approach is employed. Results imply that coffee-producing countries will continue to be worse off with the expansion of exports. Hence, we suggest that they attempt new marketing strategies that include consistent...

Flores Cruz, Luis Alberto.

This article intends to introduce the significance of wheat production in world economy and role of Hungary in it on the basis of statistic database of FAO. Importance of wheat production in world economy is proven by its share of 15% from 1500 million hectares arable land in the world. This rate is equivalent to 225 million hectares of wheat area based on FAO figures for 2009. From its world economy significance viewpoint, on the basis of some significant features it sets order of ranks among wheat producing countries, accompanied by Hungary too. Setting of rank orders is based on the quantity of wheat produced by countries, cultivated area and exported, imported wheat quantity. STUDY OF YOUNG PEOPLE’S WINE CONSUMPTION HABITS AT THE CORVINUS UNIVERSITY OF BUDAPEST AgEcon
Farkas, Agnes.
The Hungarian wine market has been undergoing continuous transformation, one of the principal reasons of which is Hungary’s European Union membership since 2004. The main disadvantage coming from the membership is that foreign wines are no longer rare curiosities but they are present to an extent that they disturb the market and constitute significant competition (in addition to the substituent products of the wine) for the domestic wines. The current economic crisis may also present various risks to the industry, such as a drop in consumption or the increase in the consumption of foreign wines with a good price/benefit ratio. Since I consider it important to preserve the market dominance of the Hungarian wines in the domestic market, I did not address the...

U.S. Import Demand for Tilapia from Selected FTAA Countries AgEcon
Ligeon, Carel; Bayard, Budry; Clark, Joy M.; Jolly, Curtis M..
Seafood consumption in the U.S. has increased over the period 1990 to 2003. A large percentage of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported. The most important seafood products imported to the U.S. are shrimp, Atlantic salmon, tilapia, catfish, crayfish, mussels and a mixture of mollusks. In 2003, the U.S. imported 199 million pounds of tilapia and tilapia products, at a value of $241.2 million, a 38% increase from the previous year. The seafood market has been considered an important foreign exchange earner for the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM), and Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) member countries. Jamaica is the only CARICOM country that exports tilapia products from aquaculture sources to the U.S. In 2003, Jamaica exported 39,950...
